A grounded sanctuary in a harsh climate: Where Sinai granite speaks to the Blue Sea.
THE CHALLENGETo design a private dwelling in the extreme heat and sun of Dahab's desert environment that is passively cooled, visually rooted in the Sinai landscape, yet offers a sense of levitation and lightness. The key challenge was reconciling thermal mass for passive cooling with the aesthetic of a floating pavilion.
THE SOLUTIONWe selected a system of massive Sinai granite plinths that act as thermal mass, absorbing the coolness of the night and slowly releasing it through the day.Upon these anchors rests a lightweight, overhanging roof slab that shields the interior from direct sun while creating the visual impression of a floating pavilion.Natural ventilation is directed by the orientation of apertures to capture the Aqaba breeze.
THE RESULTA pavilion that feels like a natural formation of the Sinai landscape—heavy at the earth, light above it.Passive systems ensure thermal comfort without reliance on mechanical cooling, delivering a sustainable sanctuary in one of the world's most dramatic environments.
